Bird Buddy vs Birdfy
We earn a commission when you buy through store links here, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How this works
Pick Bird Buddy if you want free species ID, a polished app and one camera that also fits a hummingbird feeder and a bird bath. Pick Birdfy if you want a second, close-up lens and a solar panel in the box, and you don't mind paying for AI bird ID on the Standard and Pro models.
These are the two names most people search when they shop for a smart feeder. We're testing both side by side this winter. Until those results are in, this comparison sticks to what each brand publishes, with prices checked on October 21, 2026.

Price and what you keep paying
Bird Buddy is cheaper today and its basic species ID is free. Premium is optional and adds 2K video, Nature Chat, naming returning birds and sick-bird alerts. Birdfy costs more up front and charges for AI bird ID on the Standard and Pro models, so the true cost depends on whether you want the ID feature.
Three-year cost at today's prices. Birdfy's AI plan price changes by region and offer, so check it in the Birdfy app before you buy.
Cameras
Birdfy's second lens is the real difference. The 2K portrait lens frames the bird on the perch while the 1080P lens shows the whole feeder, so you get a close-up and context from one visit. Bird Buddy uses one camera with HDR and slow motion and keeps full 2K video for Premium members.
Wi-Fi and power
Birdfy lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. That band reaches further through walls, which suits a garden, but many new mesh routers hide it. Bird Buddy's newest Birdbuddy 2 supports both 2.4 and 5 GHz. Both feeders run on a battery topped up by solar; see our solar guide for what to expect in winter.
Who should buy which
- Bird Buddy if you want free ID, plan to add a hummingbird feeder or bird bath later, or share the feeder with family through the Family plan.
- Birdfy if close-up portraits matter most, your Wi-Fi reaches the garden on 2.4 GHz, and you want the solar panel included.
- Neither if you never want a subscription prompt: read feeder cameras without a subscription.
