Does Bird Buddy need a subscription?
We earn a commission when you buy through store links here, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How this works
No. A Bird Buddy works without paying: species ID, live view and postcards of each visit are free. Premium ($69.99 a year, or $98.99 for Family) adds 2K video, the Nature Chat AI, naming returning birds, sick-bird alerts and 20% off Bird Buddy products. Both plans start with a 1-week free trial.
Free vs Premium
| Feature | Free | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| AI species recognition | Yes | Yes, plus the most advanced AI model on every postcard |
| Video quality | Standard | 2K Ultra HD |
| Nature Chat (ask the AI about your birds) | No | Yes |
| Name returning birds | No | Yes, with Name That Bird |
| Sick or injured bird alerts | No | Yes, with ways to help |
| Discount on Bird Buddy products | No | 20% |
| Beta Labs features | No | Yes |
Individual or Family?
Individual Premium costs $69.99 a year. Family Premium costs $98.99 a year and gives every invited guest the full Premium features, live streams from your feeder and shared reactions on postcards. If two or more people in your house watch the feeder, Family is the better deal. Plans are bought inside the Bird Buddy app.
Is Premium worth it?
- Yes if you want sharp 2K clips to save and share, or you'll buy add-ons (the 20% discount pays back part of the fee).
- Yes for families: one Family plan covers everyone you invite.
- No if you mainly want to know who visited. Free species ID already does that.
Over three years, Premium adds about $210 to the feeder price. Compare that with feeders that include everything up front in our no-subscription guide.
Saving on Premium and the feeder
Bird Buddy prices move a lot: the Pro Solar was $189 on October 21, 2026 against a $339 list price. Start Premium with the free week, and cancel in the app before it renews if you don't use the extras. Premium members get 20% off Bird Buddy products, which is the only discount Bird Buddy lists itself; be careful with "promo code" sites that collect clicks.
