Short answer
Most smart feeders now include a solar panel, from about 3 W (Birdfy Feeder 2 Pro) to 5 W (Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo). In summer that's plenty. In a cloudy winter, expect to top up by USB-C now and then, especially on busy feeders that record a lot.

What decides whether solar keeps up
- Hours of direct sun. A panel in shade for half the day collects a fraction of its rating.
- Season. Short, grey winter days are the hard test. That's why we test through a German November.
- Traffic. Every visit wakes the camera. A busy feeder uses far more power than a quiet one.
- Cold. Batteries hold less charge below freezing.
Get the most from the panel
- Face the panel toward your sunniest side (south in the US and Europe) and clear of the house's shadow.
- Keep the camera facing away from the sun; a rotating roof or separate panel lets you do both.
- Wipe the panel when you refill seed. Dust and droppings cut output.
- In deep winter, charge by USB-C once before a cloudy week.
