Bird feeder poles for camera feeders

Use a sturdy pole that puts the feeder about 5 feet up, stand it at least 10 feet from trees, fences or roofs, and fit a baffle with its top at least 4 feet off the ground. Point the camera away from the afternoon sun.
A smart feeder is only as good as where it hangs. A wobbly pole shakes the video, a pole next to a tree feeds the squirrels, and a camera facing the sun records silhouettes.
What to look for in a pole
- Height: about 5 feet to the feeder, high enough that squirrels can't jump up from the ground.
- Stiffness: camera feeders are heavier than plain feeders. A thicker pole or one with a ground auger moves less in wind, which keeps video steady.
- Arms: one arm for the camera feeder, one for a plain feeder or suet. Keep them apart so birds land in front of the lens.
- Baffle: a cone or cylinder baffle on the pole, with its top at least 4 feet up.
Where to put it
- Closer than 3 feet or farther than 30 feet from windows to prevent collisions.
- At least 10 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from.
- Inside Wi-Fi range: check the signal on your phone where the pole will stand.
Aim the camera, not just the feeder
For sharp, bright footage the lens should face away from the sun. In the northern hemisphere that usually means pointing the camera north or east. Solar panels want the opposite: south. Bird Buddy's solar roof rotates 180 degrees for this reason; on other feeders, an external panel on a short cable solves it.
