Birdhouse cameras

A birdhouse camera lets you watch nest building, eggs and chicks without disturbing them. Put it up in late winter, before birds choose nest sites, and match the entrance hole to the species you want. Smart bird houses such as the Birdfy Nest range include the camera, night vision and an app.
Feeder cameras show who visits. Birdhouse cameras show a whole story: a pair moving in, eggs, hatching and fledging, usually over 4 to 6 weeks. They're also a great second camera for anyone who already has a feeder camera.
Two ways to do it
- Smart bird house: the box and camera come together, with an app. Easiest to set up.
- Bird box camera kit: a small camera you fit into a nest box. More choice of box, more work.

Get the details right
- Hole size decides who moves in. Cornell Lab's NestWatch lists the right box and entrance for each species; bluebirds, chickadees and wrens all need different sizes.
- Timing: put the box up by late winter. Many birds pick sites early in spring.
- Don't open it during nesting. The camera is the point: you can watch without disturbing them.
- Night vision should be infrared, which birds don't notice, not a visible light.
- Power: solar boxes need a sunny spot; wired cameras need a cable route to the house.
A quick comparison from reviews of the Birdfy Nest: build quality and the app impressed, the 1080P footage is good enough to identify birds, and low-light video could be better. We'll add our own results after the spring nesting season.
